Evelyn J. Hadden shares strategies for making comfortable, functional, and nature-friendly landscapes with less or no lawn.

Based in Minnesota, Hadden travels across the country visiting gardens and presenting at botanical gardens, garden club and master gardener meetings, nature centers, and conferences. Her talks are generally accompanied by colorful digital slideshows. Favorite topics include "Design Ideas to Shrink Your Lawn" and "Beautiful No-Mow Yards."

Hadden has authored three gardening books. Beautiful No-Mow Yards: 50 Amazing Lawn Alternatives (Timber Press, 2012) offers over a hundred pages of inspiring lawnless gardens in a variety of styles, detailed profiles for 100 choice ground-layer plants, design tips to reduce maintenance, and guidelines for making smaller and more eco-friendly lawns. The updated and illustrated edition of Apprentice to a Garden: A new urban gardener goes wild (LessLawn Press, 2013), with whimsical line drawings by artist Shari Zimmermann, shares personal stories and musings about Hadden's experiences transforming her lifeless urban lawn into a lively four-season paradise. Shrink Your Lawn: Design ideas for any landscape, now out of print, won a silver medal from Independent Publisher's 2009 Living Now Book Awards.

A 1989 graduate of Macalester College with a degree in mathematics, Hadden spent a dozen years analyzing data for various government and non-profit organizations, then decided to pursue her childhood dream of writing. She founded the LessLawn website in 2001 and began posting articles about her Minnesota garden and her evolving views on the relationship between people and (the rest of) nature.

Hadden is a founding member of the national Lawn Reform Coalition, a resource for ecologically sound lawns and lawn alternatives.

When she isn't thinking, writing, or speaking about gardens -- or visiting them -- Hadden devotes time to singing and songwriting. She's the lead singer and pianist for the Ev Hadden Trio, playing smooth, soulful, jazzy blues at a comfortable volume in the Twin Cities.
